ON WEAVING
2022

The piece On Weaving was created following an invitation from the Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno (IVAM) to intervene in the museum’s lobby, on the occasion of the exhibition Anni and Josef Albers. Arte y vida. The piece is based on the desire to write with threads. To do so, I use the connection between the history of textile production and the history of computer science. Textiles are the original binary system: warp and weft, up and down easily translate into on and off, ones and zeros. In this piece, the characters of the alphabet are translated into a textile pattern to transcribe the first chapter of the book On Weaving by artist Anni Albers. In the textile, each weft line represents a letter. The sequence of 8 positions of the weft with respect to the warp in each line (above or below the warp) corresponds to the sequences of zeros and ones of the binary computer code used in data encoding.
